“If Mary Had Aborted Jesus…”

The Trump election and inauguration angered and upset many of the progressive liberals in our country and throughout the world. Many celebrities went on highly publicized foul-mouthed rants and tirades against the President and his conservative policies. Of course, the so-called “pro-choice” (pro-abortion) groups were some of the most ugly and hateful. Just a couple of days ago, a friend of mine texted me a picture that surfaced on the internet of some of the pro-abortion protesters. The picture is of a banner that was used by some protesters. Some have said that the banner was from a pro-abortion protest back in 2012. I am not concerned with when the banner first appeared, but with the substance of its message. Their banner read,

“IF MARY HAD HAD AN ABORTION, WE WOULDN’T BE IN THIS MESS.”

My immediate reaction to this picture was visceral. Others who viewed it reacted in the same way. If “blasphemy” is speaking ill of God and of the things of God, then these women are certainly guilty of blasphemy. Interestingly, one of the Bible verses that condemns blasphemy says, “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy” (2 Timothy 3:2). As suggested by the word associations in this verse, such people as the women who made the above protest banner typically have other mental and spiritual issues that they need to address.

But aside from the obvious sinful and godless nature of the protesters’ sentiment, I thought of some other serious consequences of their suggestion; not just for the women who made and displayed the banner, but for all of humanity:

1. Had Mary had an abortion, we would have no Savior! The name “Jesus” literally means “savior.” Matthew 1:21 says, “She (Mary) will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Jesus came “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Without the sacrifice of Christ, every human would be doomed and damned to eternal hellfire and there would be no escape from that condition. Every human would be hopelessly lost.

2. Had Mary had an abortion, we would have no mediator to intercede on our behalf before God. The Bible says, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). Without Christ as our intercessor we would be shut off from God with no ability to appeal to Him.

3. Had Mary had an abortion, we would not have a High Priest with whom we could relate. Hebrews 4:14-15 says, “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” By assuming a fleshly body and existence, Jesus made God relatable to mankind.

4. Had Mary had an abortion, we would not have an “advocate” to plead our cause in Heaven. John wrote, “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

Liberals pride themselves on being “peaceful and tolerant,” but when they don’t get their way they can be some of the most cruel, hateful, intolerant and divisive people upon the earth.

  1. I attend an LCMS church in Columbus, Ohio, and my pastor quoted from this article for his Lenten sermon last night. I would add that I am not a Trump supporter, either, but that is only part of the story.
If those ladies holding the sign want to discuss politics and ideology, here goes: Jesus was no politician; he famously told Pilate “My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36 KJV) His social views were considered radical for His day, and He offended the Pharisees–sort of the “alt Right” of ancient Judea. Of course, he never condoned misogyny, racism, religious persecution, or financial greed.
That being said, there will come a time when all humanity will be judged. The unbelievers might feel that they are being “aborted” for eternity. We should pray for them in the meantime.
